Abbateggio is situated on the northern slopes of Majella along the road that goes from the motorway tollgate at Scafa (A25) to the well-known spa, Caramanico Terme. It is 40km from Pescara and about 200km from Rome. The centre of Abbateggio, the town hall, is 450m above sea level in a beautiful panoramic position with a view that sweeps from the Gran Sasso massif as far as the sea.
The municipal territory extends for about 16sq.km moving throughfrom 210m to 1,200m above sea level therefore, the landscape is greatly variable, changing from hills to the foot of mountains.
Close to Abbateggio is the Giumentina valley, a place of important palaeontological finds that bear witness to the presence of man since the Palaeolithic period, with its characteristic dry stone tholos constructions. Caramanico Terme is an attractive town famous for its curative thermal waters, recommended especially for those with respiratory problems. It has a splendid Romanesque church in the hamlet of San Tommaso. The castle of the Barons of Genoa is a short distance from Salle, recently renovated after a terrible earthquake. The Orta Valley is spectacular with its deeply embedded geological conformations and its pure white rocks through which the rushing river tumbles along. There is San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore with its castle already belonged to the Farnese family and the church of the saints Valentino and Damiano, accomplished from the plans of Vanvitelli; the river park created along the Lavino with its small turquoise lakes, due to the sulphureous water, and a seventeenth-century mill. The pleasant village of Roccamorice boasts a famous abbey, Santo Spirito a Majella, set up by Pope Celestino V, the hermitage of San Bartolomeo and the interesting collection of tholos shelters at Colle della Civita.
